Topic:  The Liberal Arts Role in Teacher Education

Stephen Mucher is a historian and the Director of the Bard College Master of Arts in Teaching Program in Los Angeles (CA). His research and teaching explores the intersection of history, policy and disciplinary teaching practices as well as the role of the liberal arts in teacher preparation. He has published in the New Educator, OAH Magazine of History, and The History Teacher. He began his career as a high school teacher in Honduras, later teaching in Micronesia and in metro-Detroit (MI). Mucher received a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Michigan and a B.A. from Taylor University (IN).

Mucher ‘s essay “The Liberal Arts Role in Teacher Education”, which first appeared on the Views page of in July 2014 when new federal regulations for teacher preparation programs were being deliberated, encourages colleges of the liberal arts ‘to stake a claim to teacher education’. The essay is presented here in the context of the October 2016 release of new federal regulations for teacher preparation programs. The essay is reproduced with the author’s permission.
